note: "he always saves his most deadly and hypnotic efforts for his self titled imprint, here bringing 3 tracks of the purest uncut techno minimalism you're likely to hear all year, with the added bonus of 6 cochlea scouring loops of the harshest white noise and a double bonus bumper ball of nihilistic experimentation tacked on the end for those up to the task. The man continues to melt our heads with every new transmission and this one has pretty much finished us off, he'd better leave it a bit before he releases any new stuff for the sake of our health and yours."

note: "Convextion’s Gerard Hanson has been creating techno since the mid-nineties. Last year his self-titled album on Down Low generated a lot of hype, and recently Psykofuk, DeepChord, and Echospace remixed “Miranda,” a track that’s been played by quite a few big-name Detroit DJs. Through his E.R.P. alias, Hanson explores the subtleties of “intelligent techno,” that brief early nineties movement when home listening diverged just slightly from the dance floor. The result is one of the most beautiful 12-inches I’ve heard in years. On the title track, drawn-out synthetic voices chime and flutter in dramatic harmony. “Lament Subrosa” sounds strangely familiar, like it’s a lost Speedy J track. A pulsing bass synth adds just the perfect note of tension two-thirds of the way through. Finally, “Irma” gives your woofers a real workout while chimes gently play in the stratosphere. It’s a cleansing shower of sound.

It seems I’m not the only one with a renewed interest in the early nineties. Now that IDM seems to be fading away, it’s the perfect time to start over and explore the origins of the sound." - Jacob Arnold for Gridface.

Pigon / Marcel Dettmann - Kamm / Plain [2008, vinyl, beatstreet]

september 2008

#: BS03
electronic

320kbps

tracklist:
A. Pigon Kamm
B. Marcel Dettmann Plain

note: "The “Kamm/Plain” EP is techno stripped to its barest core. Pigon’s opener is slow and incisive: a soft bass drum drives us through a surreal electronic landscape while metallic buzzes, bleeps and cracks float in and out of the listener’s aural space. It builds expertly and feels like being slowly sucked into a swarm of insects; by the end of the song, the tension has reached an unbearable breaking point — that is, until “Plain.” I don’t know what’s better: Dettmann’s track itself or the simple fact that it comes up next, shattering the tension created by “Kamm” like a hammer on ice. It’s as sparse as any of his songs — he uses only a bass drum, a hi-hat and a distant, two-note melody — but each element’s mechanical, self-contained pulse proves to be the most powerful kind of minimalism. It’s not “tribal,” it’s not trendy and it sure as hell isn’t any worse for it. It’s music whose whole fully outweighs the sum of its parts, music so quietly penetrating it becomes brutal. Both “Kamm” and “Plain” are pure club dynamite; and whether they’re used for making tension or breaking it, they’ll be sure to send shivers down any crowd’s spine." - Jeremy Cohen for Little White Earbuds.

Hauntologists - EP 2 [2009, vinyl, hauntologists]

tracklist:
A1. EP2 A1
A2. EP2 A2
B1. EP2 B1
B2. EP2 B2

note: "June brought “EP2,” a trickle of information, and even a little promotion from the Hauntologists camp. For one, Stefan Schneider and Jay Ahern came forward to claim responsibility for the music. Schneider’s full-to-bursting CV includes laptop improvisation in September Collective, live percussion in the Arcade Fire-affiliated Belle Orchestre, and bass in To Rococo Rot and Kreidler — to say nothing of his solo recordings as Mapstation. Ahern, meanwhile, has built a sturdy reputation for rolling techno as Add Noise, notably collaborating with Robert Henke. Where this “techno not techno” makeup handily explains the sound of their debut, Hauntologists’ second EP is more refined, tidied, and “on-genre.” Stripped-down, more functional percussion sacrifices a lot of the untethered, real-time vitality of the first record but, on the plus side, this record’s sound in general is richer and fuller. The bass lines stand out in particular, wound into tight, springy coils of almost tactile detail. The template pushes all the right buttons but — here comes the hand-wringing — to me, this sounds more like applied formula than the earlier record. With the exploratory rough edges sanded down, tracks like “A2″ and “B2″ sound a bit indistinct. That said, “B1″ works rather brilliantly, with ominous ripples and writhing funk that craft a creepy mood and somnambulist groove more potently than anything else they’ve done. At this point, a more literal interpretation of the name “Hauntologists” might be in order: practitioners in the study of the spine-tingling." - Chris Burkhalter.

note: "Though it surely wasn’t the only limited-run boutique techno label launched last December, the Hauntologists imprint garnered plenty of interest and, naturally, speculation. The only concrete information provided was that the EP was recorded in Berlin and Düsseldorf, and that it was linked to Berlin’s Hardwax record store. The colonialism-chic of the the hand silk-screened record sleeve teased hints of African drumming from the reduced rhythms (for instance, the opening track), and of course there was that name, “Hauntologists.” Originally coined by Jacques Derrida to describe persisting echoes of communism after the fall of the Berlin Wall (see Spectres of Marx), the term “hauntology” has recently been moonlighting as a slippery adjective in music criticism, where writers like K-Punk and Simon Reynolds have applied it variously to elements in the work of artists as Burial, Mordant Music and Tricky, and especially to the sounds coming from the Ghost Box label. “EP1″ seemed to pay lip service to one notion or another of hauntology, the sleeve pointing perhaps to repressed trauma lying in the bedrock of western culture, and the music’s analogue palette generally espousing an appropriation of “outmoded” futurist styles but, ultimately, the connection felt more incidental than anything." - Chris Burkhalter.

This time featuring vox from just Dandelion (I reckon his missus wets the bed when she sniffs him). 'CCTV' is a paranoid social comment on our vastly becoming big brother totalitarian state. The production on here is second to none. Absolutely flawless. A dark, stoned modern dub masterpiece. Some ace subtle yet cosmic effects, simple bassline and occasional acidic squelch. Flipside 'Dream Cargo' is a lot heavier instrumental cut. It goes even darker into the abyss of late night future dub with a repetitive rim shot and bleak synths, big ass kick drum and again just enough stoned sounding delay and reverb. note: "San Francisco-based Joshua Kit Clayton makes his CD debut with the excellent, mini-LP length REPETITION AND NONSENSE. Clayton is a peer to such post-techno types as Oval or Pole (whose ~scape label released Clayton's first album, NEK SANALET), crafting insidiously catchy tracks awash in dub-like echo effects and littered with digital debris ("Settler," "A Choice of Words," "A Lack of Calibration"). The closing "Settler Rework" sees Clayton pursuing such painstaking processing to extremes, all but forsaking rhythm for textured abstraction and glitch-ghosted dissipation.
Clayton may love his software tools, but he also shares in the purer spirit of the Detroit and Berlin techno minimalists. His sublime "M-Shape" bounces along to a classic Motor City groove while echoing the clean, concise lines and melodic moirT of such avatars as Maurizio and Robert Hood. "A Measure of Loss," with its minute, incremental mechanics and shifting rhythmic center, and the house-spiked electronic funk of "VHS" combine the strongest points of both schools and represent what Clayton does best. All influences aside, this young musician is an original and a talent to watch closely."

"The beats are just schizophrenic enough to hold your attention, but not crazy enough to make it unlistenable. Just when the mood starts to slip into typically gloomy trip-hop, he injects some of his infamous tongue-in-cheek samples.

He also includes some excellent tracks which showcase his innovative scratching, something he hasn't done on the last couple of albums.

Hip-hop, just like every other genre, has been riding a downwards spiral towards mainstream mundanity since it's underground roots. But every once in a while, an album like this comes along that convinces me that the true spirit of innovation and fun is still around." - theunderbob.
