Hold Your Heart Up To The Light

B2.
Untitled#2

note: "Sigha’s work on ‘Rawww’ is certainly not the sort of material aimed squarely at bass connoisseurs – in fact, there is nary a rumble of percussive sub-bass throughout. Instead, its presence is used to mark out a region for the track to operate within. The results, whilst minimal and firmly head-oriented, are well worthy of investigation and careful absorption."

note: "After a few years passed collaborating with drummer Pavel Fajt, Iva Bittová teamed up with Rale guitarist Vladimír Václavek to write and record the beautiful two-CD set Bílé Inferno (White Inferno). The singer remains true to her stripped-down aesthetics, keeping arrangements sparse, letting the songs show their power with as little embellishments as possible. Václavek's acoustic guitar and vocals are often enough to accompany Bittová's sensual (and very creative) vocals and violin playing. Tom Cora may add a bit of cello, Frantisek Kucera a touch of trumpet, or children some singalong lines. The songs are long, repetitive in a way similar to nursery rhymes. The mood is kept quiet, Bittová often whispering in our ears the words of lyricist Bohuslav Reynek. The childlike playfulness of "Kdoule" and "Moucha," the more defiant "Vzpominka," the overdubbed vocals at the end of "Zvon" -- all constitute highlights. Each song seems to be the result of a labor of love between the two protagonists, no detail having been left to chance. And yet, spontaneity permeates the album, mostly thanks to Bittová's many groans, shouts, yelps, and other strange exclamations and techniques she derives from Eastern European cultures and the playground. For a double album, Bílé Inferno is short. The total duration of 77 minutes and 14 seconds would have fit on a single CD, but -- and even though the price of this Czech import gets beefed up because of the two-CD status -- the idea to split the set in two works wonderfully. Listened to as one big chunk, Bílé Inferno would sound a bit linear, become tiresome, and lose part of its appeal. Taken in two helpings, it is one stunning piece of art. The label Indies made up for the short duration with lavish artwork and photographs. This is the Iva Bittová record, timeless and essential to any fan of Czech alternative pop/rock."

Instra:Mental - Futurist
2.
Breakage - Late Night

note: "Instra:Mental and Breakage have both furrowed an incredibly fruitful path between the connected but often misaligned worlds of dubstep and drum & bass, with Instra:mental developing the stripped rhythmic genius of vintage Photek, and Breakage applying luxurious and menacing low-end weight to a deeply textured and evocative percussive template. Naked Lunch not only manage to bring the two together for a split 10" of truly exhilarating proportions, but also somehow coax some of the finest material we've heard yet from both sides. Instra:Mental takes charge of the A and deploys a more textured arrangement than anything we've heard from him to date, the percussive line borrowing much from Shackleton's signature Arabian slant but with the chords channelling a warm, widescreen element you'd more readily associate with classic Detroit Techno. It's simple, deeply effective stuff. Breakage rises to the occasion with a flipside cut doused in atmosphere, almost melancholy, tubular keys delivering the central hook while a Martyn-style shuffle provides the requisite propulsion." -mick667.

note: "This album can be seen as a further step in Morgenstern's development towards musicality and songwriting. Still inhabiting his very unique style, this mixture of smooth and elegant sounds and a twisted tech-house moodiness, Hawaii Blue combines a range of of various styles and influences not heard before on one album. Unlike his rather dark and moody double 12" The Lydia EP from 1999, this album for the first time reveals Morgenstern's true musical origin: the 80s. Far from retro-cliches, he combines influences from the good ol' time with state of the art sound and ambiance."

'Silhouette' on the flip is even darker and yet more effective, rippling with teasing minimal techno synthlines of the Rob Hood variety and rolling along on a tough technohouse bassline to keep your floor percolating like a good 'un."

Exmagma is a captivating german rock collective that published only two albums in their entire career but believe me all their compositions are highly inspired, catchy, playful and cearly accomplished in term of technical skills.

These albums delivering an impressive free form jazzy rock with lot of energy and an immense feeling for improvisation.

The 1973 eponymous debut album is an outstanding example of experimental jazz-rock with a high degree of psychedelic heat and a lucid progressive-oriented awareness."

8. Temporary Suspension
9. Gateway To Minia
10. Sticker Men

Producer - Luke Slater

note: "Mixed live by Slater, Temporary Suspension seems to speed by faster than a Japanese bullet train on first listen, but on closer inspection the subtleties and attention to detail of each track become apparent. To quote a description of an early Ostgut release, “noise is the rave signal” here, but there is also the clear craftmanship you would expect from such an experienced operator. “Hold It” is brutal, clipped funk born out of nothing more than a truncated acid squiggle, while “Whoodoo” batters “game over” bleeps into submission. “Enter Action” and “X Speaks To X” are the most explicitly “rave,” both punishingly hard without falling into the trap of hollow bombast.

It’s a shame the sequencing of the album lets it down a little. Building sharply to album highlight “X Speaks To X” (a 21st century “Mentasm”?!), it then drops off towards the end. Title track and lead single “Temporary Suspension” is a powerful tension-builder in the right hands, but here it leads into the most subdued moment, the almost wistful “Gateway To Minia.” The tail doesn’t wag so much as lash out, however, with the closer “Sticker Man,” a harsh and industrial reminder that if rave does strike back, then Planetary Assault Systems will lead the offensive." - Little White Earbuds.

A. Valentino
B. Tiffany's Case

note: "Valentino" is the more dub-oriented of the duo, with muted steel drums littering the percussive element of the track and clicks reverberating around like ricocheting bullets. The low and bouncy bass is accompanied with a metallic soundscape, vocals echo "Level One" and "Level Two" which I'm afraid to say are accurate about where this venture peaks.

The real gem is found on the flip of this transparent, marbled vinyl. "Tiffany's Case" starts with a synth line that paves the way for the rest of the journey. Fürstenberg modulates and tweaks it, using it to signal the coming of further elements. The skippy hats accompany his signature claps, which make a welcome return here. He teases the listener over and over, finally letting it come to a climax close to the end, by which point even the most stubborn of feet will be moving with glee. True club fodder." - Ross Jackson.

note: "Son's of the Dragon debuted last year on a mysterious white double vinyl. This cv313 rework plays off the original version but adds a low end throb so deep it could shake the heavens, a rhythmic shuffle which begs you to move and a hypnotizing symphony of lo fi sonic destruction, its totally menacing. The new SQX project debuts with a killer, taking a different approach to the original, they use the synthesized textures as warm sonic fragments. Its as if they were building a sonic puzzle but changing all the pieces around while assembling, leaving us with a rhythmic synth workout of the highest order, for your mind or the floor."

note: "Previous releases by anonymous London producer Spatial for his own Infrasonics label garnered widespread praise for their energized contributions to the ‘future garage’ side of dubstep, and this latest instalment ought to strengthen his case. Again, the tracks all have five-digit numerical titles, a trait of Spatial’s to keep non-musical elements to a minimum (while also mirroring the scene’s interest in postcodes), and the jagged frenzy of earlier releases has been further intensified.

The clipped, chunky beats of ‘90729′ are bound in tightly wound digital wire, the beats rigid but confused by phantom afterimages, bright stateside house chords lending warmth to an otherwise bleak vision. ‘90807′ toys with rhythmic freedoms, but again these are decoys, serving Burial-esque vocal bites and a gloomy, thoroughly synthetic vibraphone melody. ‘90731′ is jovial, even jubilant by comparison, a sensual female gasp erupting through playful rave stabs and pranksterish breaks. Heck, even the bass hoover seems perky. The clean, sleek lines and pinprick edits are custom built for large systems, striking a near perfect balance of light and shade that should charm all corners of the discotheque. Can we expect a ‘90210′ at some point?"

Reverberating into life with a thunderous sub kick and glistening percussion, Neon Speech is a strong testament to Hyetal's incredible development in the last year as an artist to watch. Intricate melodies infused in to a system-shattering low end, it's a beautiful future shock of a tune. Music at it's finest, regardless of genre. An essential track and one that will never leave the box.

Hyetal – Gold or Soul

Already well known to listeners of Mary Anne Hobbs, Gold Or Soul has a haunting, plaintive quality that is cast in that strange alchemy only Hyetal can conjure up - melodic, yet ruthlessly brutal on bassbins. You won't feel the sub-bass snapping your ribcage in half because you'll be too busy overloading your synapses with the beautiful synth patterns and pads. Anesthesia for the soul." note: "Whoever the Sons Of The Dragons are, however, there’s no question they know their way around some classic Detroit sounds and arrangements. The centerpiece here is “Motor City Matrix,” appearing in three mixes (including the brief down-tempo “Space Edit”) over the first record of the set. The original is a super-slick trip into Transmat territory, with percolating synths popping over the beat as the rhythm becomes the melody itself. The more stripped-down SP12 mix injects some more space, echo, and funky junk in the trunk, resulting in some extra cosmic goodness woven with the tough steel frame that all good things from the D are built upon. The second record features two long percussive workouts which serve as mirror images of each other: “The Evolution” and “The Journey” are similarly structured and executed along an ever-twisting spine of perpetually rolling beats and pulsing synths, with the latter introducing some very effective gauzy dub elements to the mix and the former keeping things in a bit crisper focus." - Little White Earbuds.

Passages of soundtrack-y bliss, a few extra-smooth broken beats, and a dose of hip-hop help make the album a robust and cohesive whole -- and reveal Ali as a beat-lover above all, rather than an artist of a specific genre. At times it drives a jagged shank into the notion of "dubstep," stumbling away from the altercation over the course of the album, ending up as far away from it as could be possible. Quite often though, the most amazing thing about Peverelist's music is that he makes it work; elements that on paper would clash horribly combine to form the kind of overtly stylish and smooth productions you could only attribute to an avid experimentalist." - Oli Marlow.

note: "If you are at all familiar with the dope/dubby minimal techno of BASIC CHANNEL or RHYTHM AND SOUND, then you'll know what to expect on this PUB release. It actually feels more like an album than a remix CD. After all, the first track is over 16 minutes, the 2nd over 18, and the whole CD clocks a bit over 60 minutes. Track one, the "original" mix reminds me of HALLUCINATOR or FLUXION with the ambient soothing flavor. Then a little edge and heavy low frequency bass is added in the "Delay Configuration" tracks (2 & 5) offering a great variety to the work. My personal favorite, however, is the Nick Rapaccioli remake, which sings Rhythm and Sound right from the get go. Surprisingly, the percussion brings the tempo a bit quicker than expected, but works and does not draw away from the soothing dubby piece. This is an incredible CD that can live in your CD player for quite some time without feeling like many other 'remix' CDs that would not have a lasting effect." - alternating_bit.

But rather than pander and follow derivative, formulaic blueprints to emulate these artists, Luxxe (aka Gerhard Potuznik) takes bits and pieces of inspiration and throws them into his already distinctive sound. The results are about as good, if not better, than any of this CD's obvious influences who are still attempting to make music today." ~ Rob Theakston

note: "This latest EP is another charmer, simple in execution but big in results. The original mix is dubbed-out techno, its spongiform bass, rubber-band rhythmic play and heavy dose of effects anchored by a thudding kick drum; Sharma and Krause’s interpretation turns the echo level down a touch, letting enough light shine in to reveal the cut as a deep-house throbber."

While some unions of dub and electronica result in acoustics weighed down by sofa-rattling drones and scratches, Kit Clayton treats music as a process rather than a soundstage. Here Clayton subjects the previously released 12-inch Lateral Forces to digital rejiggering: He slices, stretches, overlays, and multiplies the original recording's grooves in 40 minutes of play, creating an entirely new auditory experience."

A1. Chadderton

B1. Above

B2. Great Day

Producer - Mark Stewart

note: "Chadderton sees Stewart in a more upbeat mode. Like label mate MLZ, it sounds like he has been listening back to old US deep house records: the title track is a smoky groover, with Stewart giving his own interpretation of the drugged out tones and textures of '90s house label Guidance in a framework based on static, glitchy percussion and a chugging dub techno rhythm. "Above" sees Stewart in moodier form as layered chords build and build over one of his trademark cavernous drum patterns and a more uptempo approach than the prevalent mood on the Warehouse Sessions series." - Richard Brophy, RA.

november 2009
lbl: Planet Mu
#: ZIQ253

320kbps

A. Let Them Sing
B. From the Standpoint

Producer - Brendan Angelides

note: "Brendan Angelides, aka Eskmo is a San Francisco based music producer who records music that’s influenced by both Dubstep and older grime, with a strange added x factor and an instinctive pop feel. "Let Them Sing" mixes together stuttering, whirring half-step drums and bass with a strange whirring melody that speeds up and slows down throughout the track, backed up with warm sunbeam like chord. The intense trance-like feel of the track is relieved by the dropping in of a neat vocoder vocal for a makeshift chorus. It’s an unusual track that coils and uncoils the tension throughout, masterfully releasing and tightening the pressure. Track Two "From The Standpoint" mutates what sounds like a vocal culled from a new age meditation cd into a weird hypnagogic electronic melody, while chords spiral and drums ebb and flow underneath. Like "Let Them Sing" the listener is drawn through several stages, from an intense massaging build up, into a period of release completed with that sonic signifier of calm; birdnoise. The track then drops into an extended period of the vocal, as the chords accompany in all their strangeness. It’s like an extremely artful and arch take on the utilitarian grime technique of changing the track every 8 bars."

note: "Mika Vainio’s four tracks on “Vandal” EP show his preference for analogue working. He consequently develops a dynamic sound we all remember from PanSonic, working himself from a rather abstract structure towards arrangements which more and more suit a club setting. Straight beats, noise and the denial of the usual clicks&cuts elements are the ingredients for his contemporary version of electronic club music. The quality of his music will not only convince on the dancefloor but also on the home stereo. Mika’s passion for dynamics, reduction and industrial oscillates between these three cornerstones and what his sound stands for: being physical, raw and profound beyond all clichés." - RN.

B1. Stop What You're Doing

B2. Don't Know. Don't Care.

C. Palamino

D1. No One Likes A Smart-Arse

D2. Never Went Away

Producer - Jack Dunning

note: "The result is a Dr. Moreau-like hybrid, with useful parts of other creatures fused to its central chassis – unnatural perhaps, but strangely beautiful nonetheless. The title track is an aberration of elastic bass tones, airy chimes and the roar of a toy dinosaur, and despite the schizophrenic dynamics at play ‘Don’t Know, Don’t Care’ still manages to sound sultry, swinging its hips over a classic piano break like UK funky’s somewhat troubled cousin. Like his close contemporaries at Hessle Audio Dunning is rapidly re-configuring an entire genre, moving ever further from the generic half-step template into a blurred area that’s both dancefloor-ready and startlingly musically inventive. And as if there was any more evidence needed ‘Gonna Work Out Fine’’s centerpiece ‘Palamino’ provides it, a midnight waterfall of glassy bleeps that rushes from speaker to speaker, the rhythm catching in tiny eddies and sudden rips as it heads toward the sea."

A1. Translucent Blue Display
A2. Laconic
B1. Salmo
B2. Consumer Identity

Producer - Gerard Hanson

note: "The excellent A-side begins with 'Translucent Blue Display', which tears through its six-minute duration in a rolling charge of manic rhythms and robotic squelches. Wrapped in luxuriously lush pads that veil a mechanical infrastructure, the cut somehow manages to simultaneously be both futuristic and retro. 'Laconic', meanwhile, picks up where Convextion’s brilliant guest spot on DeepChord’s 'Vantage Isle' LP left off. Constructed out of milky delay feedback, shifting bass weight and chords that build into a pulsing frenzy, this is blunted techno imbued with a bit of Basic Channel’s spirit, and the result is fantastic.

Unfortunately, the tracks on the flip are merely serviceable efforts that ape classic Detroit ('Salmo') and the ambient-tinged electro of early Aphex Twin ('Consumer Identity'). Marred by questionable baroque flourishes – perhaps intended to mask their mediocrity – neither track manages to achieve the effectiveness of the rest of the release."

#: AMS001

A. Rework

AA. Closer

Producer - Dave Huismans

note: "There’s a soulfulness and deep-space drift, thanks in large part to those chords, yet there’s nothing “open” about this track. A layer of textural percussion exploits this brilliantly, ball-bearing beats ricocheting slowly, as though floating in zero gravity, but each soft crash describes the limits of the track’s dark, confined space. As with “Rework,” you could describe “Closer” as some kind of hybrid, but don’t let’s get hung up ontology. The record itself seems to be the product of a wearing down, through contact, of the divisions between musical muses. The “unlearned” palette on display on this record is rough, but very refreshing." - Chris Burkhalter, Little White Earbuds.

Bright Lights, Big City (Dub City Mix)

Producer - Richard J Valeo

note: "Dope Recordings is proud to announce the release of its newest single,
Bright Lights, Big City, by the NYC based artist Isomer Transition. This
release features two remixes of the original version created by Isomer
Transition himself. Organic, yet scientifically precise, these two tracks
speak to a wide range of tastes.

Bright Lights, Big City (Dub City mix) – The name speaks for itself, a warm
and driving dubbed out jam destined to move the late night crowds. Warm
synth washes matched with a relentless and subtle bass line are the core of
this mix. The Dub City Mix is a soulful, heartwarming track reminiscent of
the early days of massive warehouse raves and early morning sunrises.

Bright Lights, Big City (Blackout mix) – This mix is a haunting and
slightly more experimental take on the original. Attention to detail
presents itself through a slow buildup of sonic structures that slowly
coalesce into the soul of the track. Starting off as a sparse soundscape, the
sounds meld into a rhythmic crescendo that releases into a pumping dance
floor groove." - Dope Recordings.

Al Tourettes hails from Bristol and follows in that rich heritage of electronically enhanced bass music, folowing the tech-stepping lineage from the Full Cycle crew or Tech Itch through to Peverelist and RSD with two intricately programmed and darkly tinted killers. 'Dodgems' on the A-side is more compatible for the dubstep crew with skittering 140bpm syncopations also belying an electro influence from the likes of Two Lone Swordsmen and Ae, while the flipside cuts into a tricky techno groove reminding of Kontext with a more driving intent. If you've checked any of Appleblim's DJ sets recently you'll have no doubt heard both these cuts rinsed out." - Boomkat.
