Bright Lights, Big City (Dub City Mix)

Producer - Richard J Valeo

note: "Dope Recordings is proud to announce the release of its newest single,
Bright Lights, Big City, by the NYC based artist Isomer Transition. This
release features two remixes of the original version created by Isomer
Transition himself. Organic, yet scientifically precise, these two tracks
speak to a wide range of tastes.

Bright Lights, Big City (Dub City mix) – The name speaks for itself, a warm
and driving dubbed out jam destined to move the late night crowds. Warm
synth washes matched with a relentless and subtle bass line are the core of
this mix. The Dub City Mix is a soulful, heartwarming track reminiscent of
the early days of massive warehouse raves and early morning sunrises.

Bright Lights, Big City (Blackout mix) – This mix is a haunting and
slightly more experimental take on the original. Attention to detail
presents itself through a slow buildup of sonic structures that slowly
coalesce into the soul of the track. Starting off as a sparse soundscape, the
sounds meld into a rhythmic crescendo that releases into a pumping dance
floor groove." - Dope Recordings.

note: "Deep tripping techy styles from Apple Pips with their second drop of the week. Al Tourettes hails from Bristol and follows in that rich heritage of electronically enhanced bass music, folowing the tech-stepping lineage from the Full Cycle crew or Tech Itch through to Peverelist and RSD with two intricately programmed and darkly tinted killers. 'Dodgems' on the A-side is more compatible for the dubstep crew with skittering 140bpm syncopations also belying an electro influence from the likes of Two Lone Swordsmen and Ae, while the flipside cuts into a tricky techno groove reminding of Kontext with a more driving intent. If you've checked any of Appleblim's DJ sets recently you'll have no doubt heard both these cuts rinsed out." - Boomkat.

A. Steinhoff & Hammouda With Dionne - Touch

B. Steinhoff & Hammouda - You Are (Jus-Ed U.Q. Euphoric Remix)

note: "As one of the founders of the Smallville Records retail store and record label, Hamburg’s Julius Steinhoff has a proven ear for quality when it comes to forward-thinking dance music. The same refined taste can be detected in Steinhoff’s handful of collaborations with Abdeslam Hammouda (and, in this case, Dionne as well). Last year’s “Tonight Will Be Fine” EP was built of cottony hums, cascading melodies, and patient grooves. Their sophomore EP offers warm, deep house to get lost in — a perfect compliment to the immersive, deep techno of the year’s other Smallville release. The undeviating repetitions of the title track’s cheap-sounding piano stabs lend a touch of minimal, but also summon a cloud of magician’s smoke, diverting our attention from developing modulations in the percussion that discretely reward a full play to the end. By the time the sunny, “woo-woo” vocals begin five minutes in, we only faintly perceive how far we’ve come." - Chris Burkhalter, Little White Earbuds.

electronic

320kbps

A. Vacuum Boogie
B1. Truly
B2. Argonaute II

Producer - Sam Shepard

note: ""Vacuum Boogie," as the title suggests flows upwards, straight into air. The melodies reach, reach, reach until you're nearly ready to dive into the track yourself and push them where they so obviously want to go. This sort of unresolved tension is where Points, AKA Sam Shepherd, excels. You're either hanging on to the edge of your seat or hanging on to your dancing partner waiting for the hit. The same goes for "Truly" and "Argonaute II," on a more muted scale. The groove is paramount, the instruments locked into a Bolero build that only rarely gets extinguished, only to be built up again. Like Plessow, Shepherd's talent on this particular EP is in creating glowing bits of soul and then simply letting them run their course. Both producers often create more challenging work elsewhere, but Raw Cuts and Vacuum Boogie are a classicist's dream." - Terry Fonseca, RA.

Since then, Mark Stewart has relocated from Ai Records to the deeper trenches of Manchester’s Modern Love, which last year put out his much drooled over Warehouse Sessions series. Pounding, floor-friendly and sharply produced, that series of four 12-inches delved into the darker sides of techno and electro, but Metanarrative is something different again. Where the Warehouse Sessions were functional, Metanarrative is emotional, although, in typical Claro Intelecto style, it is an album distilled from an extensive array of influences—electro, IDM, Detroit techno, Berlin dub techno." - Janet Leyton-Grant, RA.

note: "[...] I could also draw comparisons with Dandy Jack’s work, or some of Ricardo Villalobos’ more introspective brainfunks, but I think that would be overworking what should now be obvious: Pronsato has created something genuinely fresh and exciting with this album, something that sublimates and outdoes most other similar works idiosyncratically, stylistically and artistically, and something that will outlast the barrage of limp dreck released in 2007. It’s only January, but I can say without hyperbole that this is easily going to be one of the albums of the year. Why Can’t We Be Like Us took two years to produce—it shows, and it was worth it. Take as much time letting these complicated mechanisms unwind in your earspace and you should feel rewarded with an equal magnificence." - Peter Chambers, RA.

Both champion a sonorous mid-tempo dub style, and, with the recent launch of the sub-label Echocord Colour, both please collectors with lush transparent records. But while the former favors muffled bass kicks and swishing ambience, the latter keeps the dance floor a bit closer to its heart. On “Campire Dialogue,” the second release on Echocord Colour, Luke Hess and Marko Fürstenberg keep the beats punchy and the vibe tight, but hold onto the cavernous imagery that’s given the “echo” variety of dub so much staying power. But in light of Laubner's unrelenting high-quality output, one would be hard-pressed to pick such a thing as a quintessential STL track. Ever since his first release on Perlon a decade ago, he's wielded a musical palette that is unique in colouring: An aesthetic of noise and dirt is the common thread to STL's meandering excursions into the old-world territories of deep house and techno. Having released the bulk of his work on his own Something imprint, it's more than noteworthy that STL has furthered his spectrum of labels with Smallville. Quite befitting for the Hamburg-based label, the new 12-inch is dubby at heart: The elegant and spacious B-side cuts "From a Distance" and "Six in a Row" may sound a bit low-key at first, but they handily overtake most of the current dub techno productions on the market these days. Essential release." - Bjørn Schaeffner.

note: "The seven songs here are a strong, smart combination of pummelling riffage and carefully-planned changes, something like a Ruins' 45 played at 33 – or a more complex updating of Godflesh. There's a surprising amount of variety, given that it can be tricky to individualize tracks when they're instrumental and this heavy; it's nearly all deep, aggressive rock churn, dominated by smashing drums, ultra-low grinding bass and guitar that shoots off shards of distortion in all directions. The ingredients don't vary much, it's the mixture of them that maintains interest. And, wisely, Noxagt display an awareness of the listener's attention span, keeping the album at an easily-digestible 38 minutes."- Dusted.

note: "Funkstorung may never be able to escape the inevitable comparisons to Autechre. While most people (myself included) would never mean this disparagingly, its clear that Funkstorung will have to take fairly radical steps to escape Autechre's long shadow. With the release of "Appetite for Disctruction" (yes, it is a Guns 'N Roses tribute) they have set out on a path to carve a unique and influencial niche in the field of electronic music." - Thomas Aikin.

note: "Finland's premier electronic provocateurs Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen always professed admiration for the shock tactics of The KLF's Jimmy Cauty (whose ideations include the lethal "sound cannon"). With KULMA (and the preceding OSASTO EP), Pan Sonic's own inclinations towards sonic terrorism come to the forefront of the group's minimalist techno lattices. The subtle shifts and pulses of the earlier VAKIO are largely absent from the duo's second album, replaced instead by an onslaught of grating, screeching, and squealing slaughterhouse hydraulics."

note: "You could, in some ways, call it ambient I suppose, but it has way too many hints of his rhythmic background to be 100% beatless. On the contrary he uses percussive elements in such a keen way that they serve to accentuate what we all know he’s so good at: those chords and melodies. Another big feature of this album is the inclusion of a wealth of field recordings made whilst experiencing a late night storm in Berlin and a train journey in Japan. These recordings perfectly fit the ambience of Steve’s work, particularly the train journey elements. There’s something about his tracks that gives you a sense of movement – I can vouch for the fact that this album sounds utterly amazing whilst gazing out of the window sitting on a train."

note: "OVERCAST SOUND is electronic music project formed by Michael Pettit and Jamie Drouin in 2005. Centering their compositions around the sparse arrangements of minimal techno, the repetitive chords of dub, and fragments of field recordings, OVERCAST SOUND present an intense and introspective vision of modern electronic music.
In their influential live performances, OVERCAST SOUND focuses on a fluid interaction between the two members, creating a unique performance each time by relying on improvisation and randomness within their distinct style." - Silent Season.

note: "Throughout the album, Larkin peppers his elegant tech-house rhythms with jazzy keyboard fills, strings, tambourines and oddball synth blurts, making for an especially tuneful listen that doesn't skimp on the ass-shaking. Fans of Larkin's classic works will not be disappointed here, nor will those discovering his music for the first time (a likely case, considering how long he's been out of the game). Here's hoping he sticks around this time and lives up to the promise of his early career." - Todd Hutlock, RA.

note: "The trio collaboratively wrote most of the 13 selections. The music mixes Eastern European melodic traditions, cabaret and chamber music sensibilities, small combo jazz, and even a bit of progressive rock. The tunes are rich with character and never much more than three minutes in length. While iconoclastic in its refusal to adhere to any particular existing boundaries, this is very friendly music. Volapnuk make excellent ambassadors for the avant-garde."

Revolutionary art is not determined by it's avant garde content; nor its formal or technical trickery, it's interpretation of reality or its verisimilitude, but, rather, by how much it revolutionises our thinking and imagination; overturning our preconceptions, bias and predjudice and inspiring us to change ourselves and the world...
