producer: Alan Myson
note: "Known to his friends as Alan Myson, Ital Tek has been pumping out moody post-dubstep tunes since 2006, and first made a splash two years ago with this debut album Cyclical, also released on Planet Mu. Midnight Colour is a bit less brooding than that release, but continues on the IDM-inspired dubstep tip, echoes of garage, scattered 4/4 rhythms and a tempo that stays down around 130 BPM. The album will be followed by an EP, Moment in Blue, featuring remixes by Ikonika and Falty DL, plus two tracks by Ital Tek that don't appear on the album: "Crush Horizon" and "Infinity."" - RA News.

producer: Jamie Teasdale aka Jamie Vex'd

note: "Moving even further away from the Vex'd moniker—a name he shared with a fellow dubstep producer, Roly, across the industrially lauded Degenerate album for Planet Mu—the man formerly known as Jamie Vex'd is now releasing music under the Kuedo guise. But while the name may be slightly different, Dream Sequence holds plenty of similarities to the In System Travel EP, namely the fact that the music on it is of the skewed hip-hop variety, rather than the oppressively heavy, soundsystem-testing dubstep type.

Marking his move into more fluorescent climes last year with his Sunday Walkman mixtape for the Lucky Me collective—which featured artists like Joker, Zomby and Darkstar alongside Cannibal Ox and Erykah Badu—Jamie hasn't looked back since, intently developing his production work into a fusion of off-key melodies, slow slumping drums and layers of sounds that are easy to lose yourself within. Slugabed - Ultra Heat Treated EP [2010, vinyl, planet mu]

february 2010
lbl: Planet Mu
#: ZIQ263

320kbps
topaz [8.0]

01. Ultra Heat Treated
02. Skyfire
03. Pressure
04. Quantum Leap
05. Goulash
06. Titans

producer: Greg Feldwick

note: "From the start of the record, comparisons to Degenerate-era Vex’d and Starkey’s street bass sound spring immediately to mind. The ferocious subs and keening synths of ‘Ultra Heat Treated’ sound barely tethered to a riddim that not so much lurches as hobbles. ‘Skyfire’ pings and whooshes like a mal-functioning arcade, the chopped squarewaves churning like the demented breakdown of Squarepusher’s ‘My Red Hot Car’. The influence of Tom Jenkinson is also audible in the howling synths of ‘Pressure’, which recalls the melancholy motif of 2002’s Do You Know Squarepusher? set against a pistolwhip half-step skank.

The EP continues with the heaving post-Rustie chiptune of ‘Quantum Leap’ and the queasy, K-hole discombobulation of ‘Goulash’, before ‘Titan’ delivers you back towards a vaguely compos mentis, if garishly hypercoloured reality.
Slugabed is a supremely gifted producer. His stop-start synths and crunching, off-kilter beats result in productions that deftly combine melodic sensitivity with satisfying rhythmic complexity. It’s probably safe to expect some big things from Slugabed in the near future, but for now, could someone please pass the Valium?" - Colin McKean, read full review.

producer - Skyler McGlothlin

note: "[...] Muzyka orbituje wokół instrumentalnego hip-hopu, owadziego IDM-u, porywającej samplodelii i kojącego downtempo z domieszką trip-hopu. [...]" - Maciej Kaczmarski.

Eskmo - Let Them Sing / From The Standpoint [2009, vinyl, planet mu]

november 2009
lbl: Planet Mu
#: ZIQ253
electronic
dubstep
320kbps

A. Let Them Sing
B. From the Standpoint

Producer - Brendan Angelides

note: "Brendan Angelides, aka Eskmo is a San Francisco based music producer who records music that’s influenced by both Dubstep and older grime, with a strange added x factor and an instinctive pop feel. "Let Them Sing" mixes together stuttering, whirring half-step drums and bass with a strange whirring melody that speeds up and slows down throughout the track, backed up with warm sunbeam like chord. The intense trance-like feel of the track is relieved by the dropping in of a neat vocoder vocal for a makeshift chorus. It’s an unusual track that coils and uncoils the tension throughout, masterfully releasing and tightening the pressure. Track Two "From The Standpoint" mutates what sounds like a vocal culled from a new age meditation cd into a weird hypnagogic electronic melody, while chords spiral and drums ebb and flow underneath. Like "Let Them Sing" the listener is drawn through several stages, from an intense massaging build up, into a period of release completed with that sonic signifier of calm; birdnoise. The track then drops into an extended period of the vocal, as the chords accompany in all their strangeness. It’s like an extremely artful and arch take on the utilitarian grime technique of changing the track every 8 bars."

1. Smuck
2. We Could Be Ikons (Remix Of Eero Johannes)

Producer - Sara Abdel-Hamid

note: "Someone’s slipped something freaky into Ikonika’s crunk juice. Or at least that’s how it seems on new cut ‘Smuck’, which sees the Hyperdub regular releasing on Planet Mu for the first time. Taking a leaf out of Joker’s purple G-funk book, then scribbling mad psychedelic synth doodles all over it, this is dubstep viewed through a Dirty South, Herbie Hancock-on-blotters fisheye lens. Insane and impossible to categorise, then. "
