note: "I wouldn't claim to know everything about vintage analogue signal processing, but I can safely say that this record is "warm." The title track is the darker of the cuts, while Modell and Hitchell's 313 remodel employs a more prominent 4/4 slug for the dance floor. There is a profound ambiance, meanwhile, to be found on the B-side, "A Beautiful Mind." It's a long-playing marvel, a delicately crafted piece that will enchant and inspire through its 17 minutes of outer-worldliness.

Checkmate has an intricate handmade feel. As the kicks and bass implant themselves into your psyche, the details start to unfold. Fitting, perhaps, to this time of year; it is cold outside in these parts of Europe and in the contemplative sounds here you will find rain, icy peaks and sounds of the sea that will leave you with shivers. Shown the time it deserves—this EP will become another good friend from the Echospace catalogue."

note: "You could, in some ways, call it ambient I suppose, but it has way too many hints of his rhythmic background to be 100% beatless. On the contrary he uses percussive elements in such a keen way that they serve to accentuate what we all know he’s so good at: those chords and melodies. Another big feature of this album is the inclusion of a wealth of field recordings made whilst experiencing a late night storm in Berlin and a train journey in Japan. These recordings perfectly fit the ambience of Steve’s work, particularly the train journey elements. There’s something about his tracks that gives you a sense of movement – I can vouch for the fact that this album sounds utterly amazing whilst gazing out of the window sitting on a train."

note: od początku miałam scysję z tym albumem, słuchałam trochę wcześniejszych [nie tych zupełnie wczesnych, wśród których znalazłoby się parę kozaków] releasów stephena hitchella, w efekcie czego soultek malował mi się jako idealny dla wszelakiej maści -logów przykład spadku kondycji, niegdyś bez wątpienia kreatywnej jednostki, w głowie została sugestia n/t/t.
zamiast porządnie - kilkakrotnie przewałkować drania na swoim audiowarsztacie, wolałam operować skrótami myślowymi przez co nieomal wywaliłam hitchell'owską refleksyjność do kosza. w trakcie krótkiego rekonesansu zraziłam się prostotą, surowością [ach, wymagania muzycznego prymitywa] choć jak się potem okazało - zupełnie niesłusznie.

w maleńkim, ściągającym się parę minut pliczku tkwi skompresowana porcja 7 lat imprezowej ewolucji - zawsze w jakiś tam sposób - niedocenianej [ach te modellowskie barki] gwiazdy nurtu dub techno. 63 minuty szybkiego pędu utrzymanego w twardej, technicznej rytmice, godzina podróżowania z całym zastępem miękkich przełamań, przyjemnych, słodziutkich chordów po muzycznej ameryce, od detroit, przez chicago, po wybrzeże la.
zawartościowo - każdy znajdzie coś dla siebie, są traki mocno techniczne, z ciężkim mocarnym bitem, groovującymi partiami elektronicznych conga, gdzieś głębiej kilka retrospekcji z pierwszych sesji na żywo za szczawika, trochę starego epowego soulteka, jakiś akord [lub dwa] ala dub techno [no przecież nie na darmo znalazł się w techdubowym wątku, niech rośnie w siłę!] i tak na deser parę kawałków z cyklu barowa wyluzówka w chicago. podczas odsłuchu możemy uszczknąć sobie troszeczkę imprezowego klimatu detroit, drapnąć niesamowitą radość z klubowego grania. i to mi styka.

i info dla około-labelowych koneserów około-gatunku: 5 niepublikowanych jak dotąd kawałków z wczesnej twórczości gangstera z echospace i dwa tracki zgrane bezpośrednio z występów, tych za szczawika.
