Conforce - Machine Conspiracy [2010, 2 x vinyl, meanwhile]

18 february 2010
lbl: Meanwhile
#: mean020
electronic
dub techno, techno, detroit electro
~200kbps
chrysoberyl [8.5]

A1 Sonar Conversation
B1 First Impression
B2 Subtraction
C1 Intimidation
C2 Machine Conspiracy
D1 Rare Education

producer: Boris Bunnik

note: "Lush and melodic Detroit/Dutch techno album from the mighty Conforce. Ever since the release of his 'Our Concern EP' in late 2007, Boris Brunnik has forged a celebrated catalogue of heart-warming techno for labels like Rush Hour and Curle. He arrives at his debut album for Meanwhile, shaping ten tracks of synth-cushioned headspaces equally at home on the 'floor or the bedroom. His sound takes the most florid elements of Detroit operators like Carl Craig or Derrick May and fuses them with a European dub-techno sensibility to place him in the recent tradition of Convextion."

note: "[...]  Her music is a lucid exploration of the space between Saturday night minds and Sunday morning bodies, and Die Faseris the culmination of that trend to date. It is also a rare full length from a motley international crew who are reshaping attitudes about the relationship of foreboding sonic aesthetics and pleasure, and pointing out, to those of us who might have missed them before, the horizons of the challenging and rewarding style that I would rather call anything else but “headfuck techno. Martin Kemp - After The Night / Aztec [2009, vinyl, blunted robots]

2009
lbl: Blunted Robots
#: BLR002
electronic
dubstep
320kbps
topaz [8.0]

A. After The Night
B. Aztec

note: "[...] "After the Night" works as a great introduction to Kemp's work, layers of perfectly planned percussion pattering over a genuinely interesting fusion of eerie lowered alarms and white noise that gets coloured by bubble noises that chime in time with the careering synth stab that cascades over the mix. It's all about the way he programs his bass though, letting it wheel up one second, and then pulse quickly the next.

"Aztec" absolutely thrives on the drum pattern as well, jumping off the kick drums into the clattering snares, cowbells and snatched congas while Kemp swells his melody around the back of the beat, letting it pan and shift around the mix before a few of the chunky bass notes make their frequencies fully felt. Kemp is constantly letting the track breathe, manipulating the bass through the scales so that it drives the beat, wrapping it all in subtle stabs of keyboard that jump back and forth. It creates a juttering melody that jerks limbs joyously, without any kind of malice." - Oli Marlow,  RA.

note: "The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive."

Vibracathedral Orchestra - Smoke Song [2010, vinyl, vhf records]

2010
lbl: VHF Records
#: VHF#121
rock
experimental, psychedelic
320kbps
7.3 [tourmaline]

A1. Smoke Song
A2. Cholita Maria
B. Get It? Got It... Good!

Julian Bradley, Neil Campbell, Bridget Hayden, Adam Davenport, Michael Flower

note: "The ever-mysterious Vibracathedral Orchestra returns from another relatively quiet period with an uncompromising set of outré jams on a trio of limited-edition LPs ("Joka Baya", "The Secret Base" and "Smoke Song". Slightly reorganized around a line-up of stalwarts Mick Flower and Adam Davenport with frequent collaborators John Godbert (Total) and John Moloney (Sunburned Hand Of The Man), the band here stretches way, way out over these six sides.

"Smoke Song"'s more gentle exposition starts with Davenport's santoor (a type of hammered dulcimer) leading the band into a lengthy mid-tempo groove on "Smoke Song", followed on the second half of the side by the short, quiet "Cholita Maria". The second side's 17-minute "Get It?" lays down the tremolo and phase in a manner reminiscent of the best Spacemen 3 comedowns, taking a pulse and riding it into organ - and percussion-fuelled bliss."

Airhead & James Blake - Pembroke [2010, vinyl, brainmath]

1 march 2010
lbl: Brainmath
#: MATH 06
electronic
dubstep, experimental
320kbps
tourmaline [7.3]

A. Pembroke
B. Lock In The Lion

note: "Riding a crest of adulation and praise for his 'Air & Lack Therof' 10" and a remix of Untold's 'Stop What You're Doing', James Blake pits his electro-acoustic enhanced and jazz-informed approach with Airhead on two efficiently sparse and clever tracks. Both 'Pembroke' and 'Lock In The Lion' take cues from the early dubstep minimalism of Loefah, Kode 9 or Pinch whilst also mirroring the loping hiphop/IDM swing considerations of Slugabed or Mount Kimbie. They create a brilliant slow-fast tension from achingly well-placed drums and a deft use of silence that even reflects more avant-garde producers like Kouhei Matsunaga, while still remaining tethered to a notion of more common funk with bursts of samples and splashes of melodic arrangment. iridium [6.5]

A1. Abweichung 1
A2. Abweichung 2
A3. Abweichung 3
B. Abweichung 4

producer: Wolfgang Voigt

note: "Abweichung (die) n. aberrance, wandering from the correct path, going astray, deviation from what is normal. Wolfgang Voigt could have likely named plenty of tracks "Abweichung" before the release of this EP, which sees the Kompakt boss kickstarting the Profan imprint once again after a nearly 18-month layoff. Freiland Klaviermusik, the last 12-inch to see the light of day on the label, was just as confrontational to audiences accustomed to at least a semblance of dance floor utility from the legendary producer. But Profan has also been a home to the more abstract edges of techno, and the title seems oddly appropriate for these four tracks. Each seem to revel in their inflexibility, winding through their relatively short length—only one track reaches above four minutes—by investing in the power of a brutal kick and varied samples.
