Food And Art (In The Spirit Of Revolution)

Producer - Carl Craig (tracks: 1 to 13, 15)
Written-By - Carl Craig (tracks: 1 to 12, 14, 15)

note: Text on front cover from Jeff Sawell reads:
Revolutionary art is not determined by it's avant garde content; nor its formal or technical trickery, it's interpretation of reality or its verisimilitude, but, rather, by how much it revolutionises our thinking and imagination; overturning our preconceptions, bias and predjudice and inspiring us to change ourselves and the world...

note: "Duplex at long last deliver their debut album - Produced in the suburbs of Rotterdam, perfecting their blend of of deep inner city techno and electro breaks, neon styles. After more then 10 years producing music for several labels, these eleven tracks are the most coherent mission statement from Duplex yet – perfecting a hybrid between the abstract production of Basic Channel and melodic techno of pioneers like Derrick May. Atmospheric sequences feature heavily here, an unusual love of layered construction underpinned by deep driving bass lines, beautiful synths and smooth but dirty drum machines."

note: "[...] No longer sounding like a trio, Death Ambient has become a collective, presenting an extremely unified musical vision. As with many of Frith’s solo projects, sonic diversity is omnipresent, but here, no transition feels forced or unnaturally preconceived. “A Cocktail of Chemicals” is a fascinating study in morphing fragmentation, as what sounds like a bicycle wheel speeds up, slows down and stops, related remnants and fragments crackling on either side of the stereo spectrum. A similarly treated power chord enters, disintegrating as it switches octaves. It recedes, replaced by a rising tide of explosive thunder and, incredibly, a delicate transparency of bubbles that takes over the remainder of the track, picking up washes of electrostatic and rumble as it goes. october 2009

A. Speak
B. Negative

Produced by Paul Rose

note: [...] It's clear that Rose has progressed since A Mutual Antipathy. His flair for stark synthesis and apocalyptic atmosphere seep into his newer productions, and "Speak" ultimately personifies that. Rose uses the delayed cold synthesizer stabs of dub techno under his punchy drum work, layering on echo and reverb to the point of immersion. His synth work feels brittle at the top end—as if the vinyl crackles could splinter into shards at any moment—while the delayed lower frequencies create a black hole-like atmosphere that sucks you in to a meditative state.

"Negative"'s synthesis gets paired with coursing 2-step drums and the kind of emphatic snatched female vocals that will undoubtedly win Rose new fans, but it's when the beat stutters itself up a touch and the chiming bells come careering in at the second drop that the track really swells into a Scuba production. Rose uses the bells so sparingly that it drives you deeply in the rolling basslines, apprehensive that they may not reappear again to flesh out the drum crunch. - Oli Marlow, RA.

Composed By, Written-By, Producer, Mixed By - Stephan Laubner

note: Stephan rewired his soundsystem and programed deep moving analog synthchords and sub bass driven grooves. The result this time, is a mix CD of so called dub techno music. A nice mixture somewhere between ambient sounds and low pulsating beats. Floating audio scientific modifications of endless repeating tones next to reverbed percussions and a good portion of sympathetic background noises and processed fieldrecordings. Dubby explorations in the relaxed areas of beat orientated something music. Take a time out and follow these laidback tracks traveling from here to eternity.

note: Dubstep originator Pinch steps up with his debut on Bristol’s homegrown dubstep label. This double a side 12” is a future classic and undoubtedly one of the finest releases on the label to date. Dr Calson features spooky paranoia ridden vocals and a twisted bassline, punctuated by Pinch’s trademark percussion wonk factor.136 trek is a minimalist hypnotic 4 x 4 Bristol sub bass excursion - a real gem.

note: This album is glorious. It is similar to Vladislav Delay, full of dub niceness, and slow pitch cuts and clicks. The quality is very dry, like a wine or something. Crisp. There are details on this album that are like expensive things I can only imagine owning.

It might be Clayton's best work. I expect that Vladislav Delay gets all the hype, for his album Anima. But Anima is not as good as this. -donkeye, 24 october 2001.

10. Untitled 10

note: Ljud is Swedish for "sound", and a more accurate album title is hard to come by. Andreas Tilliander takes small clicks and pops and construct small, intricate loops. A comparison with labelmates Snd is impossible to avoid, even though Andreas makes even more minimalistic music. And I can feel that there is a bit too little going on, that constant small change that make this kind of loop-based music enjoyable is sometimes so small on Ljud that it is hardly noticeable. Things get better as the album progresses, and at times a common straight 4/4 beat give the tracks more structure. The album must be seen as a whole, where the early tracks' utmost minimalism is minutely supplanted by a growing change towards the end of the album. That all ten tracks are untitled may be a further indication of this. Especially track nine is really good. - Henrik Stromberg, Igloo Magazine.

It’s interesting that this material is only seeing the light of day well over a decade later – unquestionably this set is a statement of Vainios unique contribution to techno. This is as hypnotic and reduced in form as it gets. No padding here; this stuff is lean and built for high volumes. [...]" - oootini on Discogs.

note: :
"Galaxy 2 Galaxy is a band that was conceptualized with the first hitech Jazz record produced by UR in 1986/87 and later released in 1990 which was "Nation 2 Nation" (UR-005).
Jeff Mills and Mike Banks had visions of Jazz music and musicians operating on the same "man machine" doctrine dropped on them from Kraftwerk. Early experiments with synthesisers and jazz by artists like Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Weather Report, Return to Forever, Larry Heard and Lenny Whites Astral Pirates also pointed them in this direction.
UR went on to produce and further innovate this form of music which was coined "Hitech Jazz" by fans after the historic 1993 release of UR's "Galaxy 2 Galaxy" (UR-025) album which included the underground UR smash titled "Hitech Jazz".

Electronics - Maso Yamazaki
Engineer - Makoto Kawabata , Maso Yamazaki
Guitar - Makoto Kawabata
Music By - Andromelos
Organ - Makoto Kawabata

note: "Acid Mothers Temple's Kawabata Makoto joins Yamazaki Maso of Masonna fame and Okano Futoshi, formerly of Ghost, for some grade-A psychedelic high jinks. Kicking off with twittering electronics and droning organ, it all starts very calmly and over the course of the next five minutes gradually transforms itself into a fully-fledged space rock odyssey. This first piece is rammed with ideas, taking all kinds of moodswings in its stride over a forty-minute duration, expanding far beyond the realms of improvised, vibe-heavy psychedelia, there's some impressive musicianship here too, particularly from Kawabata's reverberating lead guitar. For the second, similarly lengthy piece, Yamazaki steals the show with some primordial electronics intruding upon the more organic elements of the group, his crisp, detailed oscillator spasms upsetting the mix like a malevolent virus."
