Kelela - Hallucinogen [2015, warp records, ep]

Kelela - Hallucinogen
2015 / 12" / Warp Records (UK), WAP387D
r'n'b

pop, lovesick, sweet, bouncy, chillin'

[7.8] beryl.

total time: 19:47

note: "Tools is the latest creation from Italian experimentalist Giuseppe Ielasi. While Ielasi’s work over the years as a guitarist and drone artist has become highly regarded…

his work on 2009’s Aix (12k1051) completely broke that mold, turned heads, and quickly became one of his most critically acclaimed releases. The fractured, almost jazz-like rhythms pieced together from sampled fragments that graced Aix has been taken one step further in concept with Tools.

Created as singular studies into the physicality of everyday objects, each track on Tools, named for the object from which it was made (“Cooking Pan,” “Rubber Band,” “Paper Lamp”), is a wonderfully playful trip into new ways of listening and experiencing our everyday.

With a title such as Tools, Ielasi has set no preconceptions or metaphors with his music except for the idea to make an experimental (and somewhat ironic) play on the traditional “DJ-tools” type of record that contains buiding blocks to allow a DJ to layer and combine with other records. In Ielasi’s case, however, the twist is in the fact that these tracks, despite being simple and stark, are complex, captivating structures and explorations of physical objects, composed in a way that is becoming signature Ielasi, that becomes perfect experimental music for hazy summertime listening. – 12k"

lbl: Workshop
#: WORKSHOP 10

A. Lowtec  - Untitled
B1. Schweiz Rec.  - Untitled
B2. Ron Deacon  - Untitled

note: "Ten releases into their catalog, Workshop seem to have more momentum than ever. After releasing some of last year's finest records—namely Reagenz's Playtime and Kassem Mosse's Workshop 08—the rubber-stamped imprint returns with another untitled EP, this time featuring Lowtec and two new artists, Schweiz Rec and Ron Deacon. Much like Playtime, the new record draws from the more colorful end of Workshop's palette, with deep, shadowy tunes on one side and disco-tinted house on the other. Though less subtle than some of their previous releases, Workshop 10 is surely one of the label's best.

Taking the entire A-side to himself, Lowtec provides the record's moodier selections. The first tune is the EP's best: as dark as it is warm, with a breezy rhythm, dramatic strings and vaguely mournful diva vocals. It's a surprisingly melancholy track for Lowtec, who normally leans toward more cryptic house and techno, as heard on EPs like Workshop 06 and Angstrom. The second part of Side A is equally surprising: a smoky, broken beat affair, ala Burial or Actress, but delivered in perfectly polished tones. It's unclear exactly how these songs are related—though divided by a period of silence and a series of loud pops, Workshop 10's A-side is widely listed as having only one track. In any case, both parts are exceptional—the first bursting with club potential, the other making for contemplative home listening.

On the B-side, Workshop's two newcomers brighten things up considerably. Schweiz Rec contributes an organ-dominated number with a cartoonishly blissful vibe, disrupted now and then by a weird, distorted squawk. Ron Deacon follows with a sunny, disco-influenced house track, whose strutting rhythm and warbling melody make it Workshop 10's most club-ready selection. Both artists make impressive debuts, and help expand the record's pop sensibility without compromising its enigmatic feel. " - Will Lynch, RA.

note: "When the hard work of the day is done, and you go home and begin your nightly routine of winding down, there are only so many things that reciprocate that relaxed stillness. Here at Install, we're happy to say that we have the exact soundtrack for many of your sleepy evenings to come: David Tagg's newest album PENTECOST. Following in the wake of his Cold Spring Harbor EP, and utilizing a process that included using his grandfather's reel-to-reel tapes of organ playing for source sound, David has created what could be described as an "ambient novel". A superbly vivid work of musical nonfiction that tells the stories of 1000 photographs, long since forgotten memories and a crackling, eroded legacy, now exhumed from the dusty wine cellars of Tagg's sentimental estate. What all this wholly amounts to is a landmark recording, full of cool, subdued tones and soft shadowy movements. PENTECOST could be David's strongest ambient moment, if not only for consistency, but also for potency." - label.

note: "Prologue Records is one of our favorite labels at Beatport. The ability to merge deep, conceptual techno with a floor ready groove has really caused us to take notice. Artists like Cio D’or, Donato Dozzy and shooting star Claudio PRC have all supplied unbelievable thoughtful techno cuts on a regular basis. The latest release is from Claudio, and comes is his second release for the label. This EP is a bomb, plain and simple. All tracks are clear in sound and made with absolutely creative underground techno idealisms. Perfect for the deeper moments in the night, or when you just want to get the dancefloor to tap into their minds a bit more than simply shaking their rumps. This is straight forward underground techno which we can’t seem to get enough of. The entire release is highly recommended." - beatport.

For this one, he keeps his unique style, which was also produced on legendary Thinner netlabel and on English Rednetic recordings. Probably more enigmatic, this “City Sound Vibrations” new travel through the city emphasizes our urban way of life, surrounded by so many mysterious sounds we don’t pay attention anymore. With these 4 new stories, sometimes submerged of bass or nearly beatless, we can fell all the vibrations from a “Night Avenue” to a “Rainy Garden”, and admire a moment of silence, as if during 28 minutes all activities were root to the spot. It’s now time to take advantage of this moment of respite and to share this intimist city vision with one of the most innovator artist of the Russian dub-techno scene." - distributor.

1.   Pupkulies & Rebekah – Hold Me Tight (Shaun Reeves & Guti Remix)
2.   Shaun Reeves & Guti – Saudade

note: "The visionary project on everyone’s lips, Wolf + Lamb, unveil a new collaboration from Shaun Reeves & Guti with the heartwarming ‘Hold Me Tight’ EP. Bookmarked by the summer landscape of Berlin and inspired by good memories of their recent introduction, these two sincere and momentous creations were conceived in a new collaboration between Shaun Reeves and Guti. “Guti and I met in Miami last March and decided that we get along really well,” explained Shaun Reeves. In fact Guti tattooed both Shaun’s and Seth Troxler’s names on his arms at that rst meeting, perhaps an early indicator of comradery and shared spirit. “We got together again in Berlin not too long after that and that’s when we made the Hold Me Tight remix.” Originally penned for a defunct German label, the remix of Popkullies & Rebekahbecame a dance oor bomb for Gadi & Zev AKA Wolf & Lamb, who picked it up as soon as they could for release on the New York based imprint. A playful remix - as much for its snappy bass and sharp snares as for the integral hums and contented vocal – it sets free a upbeat and vivacious style from these two producers. Contrastingly ‘Saudade’ takes a more sombre route, with Guti playing lively staccato and solo jazz- infused piano to create a warm melodic ensemble. Shaun Reeves is one of the new Detroit ma a rising from the techno birthplace alongside Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson (both his roommates in Berlin) and Lee Curtiss, whose talent and shared party spirit came to the attention of the masses in 2009. Part of the core Wolf + Lamb family, Shaun demonstrates a awless passion for exploring the boundaries of electronic music. Guti began to discover his musical passion as a jazz pianist, before becoming a rock star in his home of Argentina when a young, wild and free spirit. With signi cant releases laid down on Locodice’s Desolat label and forthcoming on a series of proli c imprints, he has become a key Latin-American talent worth paying attention to." - phonomonkey.

note: "We are happy to present our first japanese artist on Quintessentials, Ryo Murakami. Ryo is no stranger to the scene, as he already released a bunch of records on respected labels like Dessous, Pokerflat or soon on Mule Musique. The main track "lunch of god" is a deep, raw and reduced house track with a strong US flavour and was already featured in Jus'Ed's Underground Quality radio show. Ryo takes it even further with reducing - the result is "depths", a basic kickin techno track. The flipside offers the more than 11 minutes long "lunch of god" remix by house master Scott Ferguson. The Ferris Park maestro keeps things close to the original but adds more club feel plus a superb lil bonus track of his own." - the label.

producer: Tatu Metsätähti

note: "Original Skweee Gee, Tatu Metsätähti aka Mesak presents his debut album of concatenated electro-autistics for Harmonia. 'School Of Mesak' is an exemplary tutorial in the art of Skweee beat building, using the tightest of ingredients to make bare bones riddimic contortions that ooze funk from every pore. In a similar manner to Disrupt's digi-dub productions, Mesak's electroid spasms are incredibly efficient, sticking to his themes, but morphing forward with every bar to keep opening kinks in the repetition. The brilliant 'Omega Jam' is a case in point, clasping the riddim with nimble fingers to rearrange it rubiks cube style until we arrive at the solution. Perhaps even more pertinently, the dubbed out 'Passion Of The Geist' merges the two disciplines beauitfully, while 'Virgins Of Bergen' lays back into an electro-funk groove with an inimitable sense of micro-funk. And just in case you thought Skweee was all about shoddy lo-fi values, check the dynamic range of cuts like 'Normal Brain Tribute' or 'ByteBurger' for some rich sonic detailing. We're not saying Skweee has matured (god forbid), but it's definitely learning something at school. " - boomkat.
