Recommendation: STL

"The mysterious Harz-based producer breaks his silent state: RA's Todd L. Burns tracks down Stephan Laubner for his first English language interview, finding that there's much more than house music to talk about with the multi-faceted artist and label owner."

W meandrach wczesnych rylisów STL'a odnajdziecie udźwiękowienie obrazu ohydnie rozchełstanej, surowej hybrydy techno i - zawieszonego gdzieś poza kontinuum czasoprzestrzennym - hipnagogicznego house'u.

Clarinet [B-flat, Alto, Contra Alto] - Ben Goldberg
Guitar, Guitar [Prepared, Dobro], Banjo - Mark Orton
Harp, Accordion - Zeena Parkins
Producer - Carla Kihlstedt , Mark Orton
Trumpet, Horns [Baritone], Organ [Pump], Piano [Toy], Celesta - Ara Anderson
Violin, Viola, Violin [Trumpet], Voice, Piano, Celesta, Vibraphone [Bowed], Bass - Carla Kihlstedt

note: "Despite the departure of founder member Rob Burger, Tin Hat have produced possibly their deepest, most beguiling work with The Sad Machinery of Spring; their fifth album released in their ten years together. Violinist/vocalist and multi instrumentalist Carla Kihlstedt and guitarist/multi instrumentalist Mark Orton have added trumpeter Ara Anderson (of Tom Waits fame) and clarinettist Ben Goldberg to the mix, plus they’ve upgraded the extraordinary harpist Zeena Parkins to full-time status. With instrumentation ranging from dobro to the massive contra alto clarinet (everyone except Parkins seems to play about 15 different instruments), Tin Hat have increased their already expansive and totally acoustic palette into something even richer and stranger.

The inspiration for this album is the work of Polish writer Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), whose dark, Kafka-esque surrealism makes a nice fit with Tin Hat's lush yet disturbing mix of Eastern European folk, 20th century classical and free improvisation. Titles like "The Secret Fluid of Dusk", "Dead Season" and "Black Thursday" give some idea of the mood. Even during the sprightliest moments, there’s a finely honed dissonance at work which suggests that something not quite right may be lurking in the shadows. This is made most obvious on Kihlstedt’s urgent, breathy rendition of "Daisy Bell" (aka "Daisy, Daisy"), which suggests that Daisy would be best advised to avoid hopping on the back of a bicycle built for two and taking out a restraining order on her would-be suitor instead. Elsewhere the mix of beauty and creeping dread is more subtle. "The Land of Perpetual Sleep" manages to be sinister and dreamily beautiful simultaneously; violin and clarinet trace a wounded, sickly melody over a gentle ripple of harps, dobro and drones, while "Janissary Band" sounds like Stravinsky played by a strangely infernal clockwork machine.

Amazingly accomplished and beautifully recorded work from a group of preternaturally talented musicians. Record of the year material, and it's only January..." - Peter Marsh, 2007-01-23, BBC Music.

A. Floods V3
B1. Floods V3.2 (Surgeon Remix)
B2. Floods V3.1 (The Bass Soldier Remake)

note: "I like drums. I really like drums. The original of ‘Floods V3’ has amazing drums. Not always the most danceable drums, but the kind that skitter across your brain like spit on a frying pan. The kind of drums that you want to dance to even if your body might not be able to manage. This is the kind of track that if you made up one movement to go with each sound, you’d end up dancing like one of those cut-up Lasse Gjertsen videos on YouYube.

Bass Soldier turns in, unsurprisingly, a very bass-heavy version. He keeps the essence of the looseness of the drum tracks, but expresses it in a more straightforward drum and bass fashion that could potentially drive people wild if dropped at the right time in a techno set.

Surgeon’s remix, I must admit to finding somewhat baffling. It uses a lot of the same sounds but twists them into a very direct and very very industrial sounding groove. It puts me in mind of early 90s Nitzer Ebb with its lurching awkward rhythm and harsh sounds. Full marks for uniqueness but I can’t help feeling it’s a shame to take the complex, funky and engaging rhythms of the original and reduce them to this." - Jacob Wright, RA.

Still Going - Still Going Theme [2007, vinyl, dfa]

18 september 2007
lbl: DFA
#: dfa2179
electronic
deep house, disco
320kbps
topaz [8.0]

A. Still Going Theme
B. On And On

Eric Duncan  & Olivier Spencer

note: "'Still Going Theme' is clearly pushing James Murphy's buttons right now. He's signed it to DFA Records and made it the centrepiece of his and LCD Soundsystem drummer Pat Mahoney's recent Fabric compilation. In the mix with what Mahoney calls the "gay-ass disco" of 'Fabriclive 36', this dreamy track from Rub-N-Tug's Eric Duncan and Olivier Spencer (Mr. Negative) shines through.

The sassy piano line of 'Still Going Theme' makes it utterly irresistible. It's the kind of big hook that would inspire dancefloor singalongs, if everyone could wipe the big stupid grins from their faces for a minute. The carefree keys belie the depth of the track, which is anchored by a deep dubbed-out bass and swirling with trancelike synths. It all swells into a swooning Balearic epic. Ultimately, however, the sheer catchiness of ‘Still Going Theme’ may keep it from attaining the classic status of Joakim’s remix of ‘Camino del Sol’. Disco and deep house DJs bent on reliving their summers are warned: this one has your name on it, but don’t wear it out.

B-side ‘On and On’ recycles the same sounds over a progressive groove to create the kind of driving melodic builder that will warm through sets by the likes of Desyn Maseillo and Nick Warren. The similarities between this and ‘…Theme’ suggest that Still Going may turn out to be a one trick pony. But for now, what a trick!" - James Glazebrook, RA.

Conrad Protzmann & Backseat Driver

note: "ancient methods consists of 2 guys based in berlin. there has been a bit of mystery surrounding them, but from what i can see basically for them it is all about the music and this is their priority, rather than creating an anti-brand through anonymity. so far they have put out 3 eps on their on label, each generating a lot of buzz, and rightly so. beyond the fact they are some of the most beautiful slices of vinyl i've ever seen (check this pic of AM02), these records are some seriously heavy gear fusing industrial and techno sounds. think some of the old downwards stuff and you'll start getting an idea. powerful, distinctive, uncompromising techno at its very best. so it should be pretty clear by why i approached ancient methods for a mix..." - mnml ssgs
