note: "Tools is the latest creation from Italian experimentalist Giuseppe Ielasi. While Ielasi’s work over the years as a guitarist and drone artist has become highly regarded…

his work on 2009’s Aix (12k1051) completely broke that mold, turned heads, and quickly became one of his most critically acclaimed releases. The fractured, almost jazz-like rhythms pieced together from sampled fragments that graced Aix has been taken one step further in concept with Tools.

Created as singular studies into the physicality of everyday objects, each track on Tools, named for the object from which it was made (“Cooking Pan,” “Rubber Band,” “Paper Lamp”), is a wonderfully playful trip into new ways of listening and experiencing our everyday.

With a title such as Tools, Ielasi has set no preconceptions or metaphors with his music except for the idea to make an experimental (and somewhat ironic) play on the traditional “DJ-tools” type of record that contains buiding blocks to allow a DJ to layer and combine with other records. In Ielasi’s case, however, the twist is in the fact that these tracks, despite being simple and stark, are complex, captivating structures and explorations of physical objects, composed in a way that is becoming signature Ielasi, that becomes perfect experimental music for hazy summertime listening. – 12k"

Dominic Maker & Kai Campos

note: Adding a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – are set to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Crooks & Lovers’ on Scuba’s Hotflush label in July.

Mount Kimbie’s first two EPs – ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds.

Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released last year with ‘Sketch On Glass’ recently undergoing reworks from the likes of Falty DL, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio.

Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.”

Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope.

The band’s sound and response to the dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect." - ST Holdings.

1. Plight (The Spiralling Of Winter Ghosts)
2. Premonition (Giant Empty Iron Vessel)

note: "This CD and the accompanying "Flux and Mutability" are excellent backdrops for your imaginings. Like a painting that one sits and contemplates, after a period of time, the viewer or in this case the listener of this music will find him or herself in the midsts of the work. Some may find this haunting, to others releasing, to still others it creates a space that is simply not the day to day. Buy these, and Harold Budd's "the Pearl" and the "White Arcades," sit back, close your eyes, relax and drop into another reality." - by Contrarian.

Violin - Jody Ghani

note: "Denmark's Rumpistol has been on the scene for awhile now. Five years ago, he put out his eponymous debut on the now-bustling Rump label; since then, he's been quietly making a name for himself in the electronic music underground. His sound is a glitchy, clicky brew, combining mathematical rhythms with crisp atmospherics and smart melodies. Post-rock-laced "Refleksion," replete with a catchy guitar line, sees Rumpistol at his best; it is a smart, memorable piece of electronic music with connections to early Pluramon work.
Five years on the scene have definitely left their mark on Dynamo - professional and original, this is an impeccably polished record worthy of patronage by any keen electronic music enthusiast. Due to their abstract manner, it can be difficult to conceptualize these eight tracks as individual compositions rather than one whole movement, and this sense of unity is magnified by Rumpistol's adherence to a fairly consistent formula. Certainly, certain tracks have different personalities - "Kocmoc" is dreary and meditative, "Beito" is vast and dramatic, and Mouse on Mars-esque "Mobile" is captivatingly skittish. Still, any disparate elements found between tracks come together to form a convincing whole.

Perhaps the best aspect of Dynamo is its individuality. Certainly, the concepts contained within are all culled from previous sources – such is the case in electronic music and virtually any genre around today. But the songs themselves, wrapped up and put together, are distinctly Rumpistol's own. And as far as contemporary electronic music goes, they're top of the line." - indieville.

1. Aurora
2. Crystal Visions
3. A Handful Of Dust
4. Suspended
5. Aurora In Dub

producer: Stefan Panczak

note: "Inch-time is Stefan Panczak, a London-based Australian with a penchant for multi-textured electronica. After a string of releases including two full-length albums, and curating the "Teaism" compilation also on Static Caravan, as well as sound tracking the latest National Express advertisement comes this twelve-inch with five new tracks and a spoonful of jazz-tinged melodic nous.

The creeping, nocturnal title track bubbles with a dark intensity, its brooding sensibility at odds with the clicks and whirrs which skitter throughout on this stately slice of icy electronica. An echo-laden dub version is even more eerily atmospheric and reminiscent of Robin Saville, if he was organising his garden tools in the shed on the night of a full moon. The sprightly "Crystal Visions" provides contrast, being feather-light and wafted along by crinkled beats, though there’s still an insidious feel lurking in the background, before briefly floating into the realms of exotica in a way that would surely have pleased Martin Denny. Meanwhile, "A Handful of Dust" takes swirling, repeated melody patterns to craft a quietly precise composition, sculpting sounds to form a beautifully layered concoction of rhythms, twanging guitar and a host of otherworldly sounds. "Suspended" twinkles with barely-concealed malice, its minute-long running time feeling like an extended intro to one of Tortoise’s more lugubrious excursions. Pattering rhythms duel with ghostly bass, all anchored by a chiming melody which coils tightly before fading out to reach a hushed climax." - Static Caravan.

Iva Bittová - Bílé inferno [1997, 2 x cd, indies scope records]

note: "After a few years passed collaborating with drummer Pavel Fajt, Iva Bittová teamed up with Rale guitarist Vladimír Václavek to write and record the beautiful two-CD set Bílé Inferno (White Inferno). The singer remains true to her stripped-down aesthetics, keeping arrangements sparse, letting the songs show their power with as little embellishments as possible. Václavek's acoustic guitar and vocals are often enough to accompany Bittová's sensual (and very creative) vocals and violin playing. Tom Cora may add a bit of cello, Frantisek Kucera a touch of trumpet, or children some singalong lines. The songs are long, repetitive in a way similar to nursery rhymes. The mood is kept quiet, Bittová often whispering in our ears the words of lyricist Bohuslav Reynek. The childlike playfulness of "Kdoule" and "Moucha," the more defiant "Vzpominka," the overdubbed vocals at the end of "Zvon" -- all constitute highlights. Each song seems to be the result of a labor of love between the two protagonists, no detail having been left to chance. And yet, spontaneity permeates the album, mostly thanks to Bittová's many groans, shouts, yelps, and other strange exclamations and techniques she derives from Eastern European cultures and the playground. For a double album, Bílé Inferno is short. The total duration of 77 minutes and 14 seconds would have fit on a single CD, but -- and even though the price of this Czech import gets beefed up because of the two-CD status -- the idea to split the set in two works wonderfully. Listened to as one big chunk, Bílé Inferno would sound a bit linear, become tiresome, and lose part of its appeal. Taken in two helpings, it is one stunning piece of art. The label Indies made up for the short duration with lavish artwork and photographs. This is the Iva Bittová record, timeless and essential to any fan of Czech alternative pop/rock."

enjoy!
