Basic Rhythm - Raw Trax

29 january 2016 / lp, 12" / Type Recordings - Type128
bass, uk garage, abstract, experimental
razor-sharp, syncopated, fat

[8.0] topaz

A1. Raw Trax (Weekend Rush)
A2. Raw Basics
A3. Prototype
A4. Maintain
B1. Your Love
B2. Get Dark
B3. Feel Me
B4. Break It Down (4 Da Kru)

Wodzirej twardych rytmów wchodzi na piętrzące się schody nowatorskości proponując breakbeatowo/garage'owy zestaw sunkopujących bangerów.
Rozmarzony hi-hat wtapia nas w odmęt bąbli pełnych powietrza, wolnej przestrzeni, ostrych perkusjonaliów i nośnych nurkujących basów. LP "Raw Trax" to mocarz w kategorii aranżu, trudno klasyfikowalny, pozostający na granicy abstrakcji, fraktalnie spiętrzony topór na fanów bassu. Zestaw zostaje wyposażony w murzajowe, dopracowane do granic perfekcji brzmienia, damsko-męskie wyjce misternie tworzące słodką, nocną atmosferę. O ile metoda kompozycji jest wielce nowoczesna, dźwięki niesłychanie urokliwe i zauraczające, o tyle słuchając całości naraz możemy poczuć się zmęczeni.

note: "Released on MJ Cole's Prolific label, London producer Roof Light really excels on this EP, and shows a love and mastery of a variety of different sounds, styles and skills. The MJ Cole connection shines through on the title track, with a multicoloured palette of funky sounds and samples all mixed together perfectly to create a fresh and soulful garage stepper. But while "Harlem Power" is bright and summery, "Two Cities" is an intense, Burial-esque moodscape, while "Touch Down" is a real event - the beat slowly subsides, leaving a sea of gorgeous reversed pads, only to slowly build itself up again in a variety of ways. An unexpected, random, yet riveting and affecting EP from start to finish." - Juno.

Dominic Maker & Kai Campos

note: Adding a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – are set to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Crooks & Lovers’ on Scuba’s Hotflush label in July.

Mount Kimbie’s first two EPs – ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds.

Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released last year with ‘Sketch On Glass’ recently undergoing reworks from the likes of Falty DL, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio.

Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.”

Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope.

The band’s sound and response to the dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect." - ST Holdings.

Blawan - Fram [2010, vinyl, hessle audio]

6 may 2010
lbl: Hessle Audio
#: HES013
electronic
dubstep, post-garage
320kbps

A. Fram
B. Iddy

note: "Hessle Audio has made its name on its stable of garage / dubstep artists that lean heavily on the former half of that designation, boasting names such as Pangaea, Untold, Ramadanman and TRG, names that I admittedly have had trouble engaging in the past. This week sees Hessle releasing a 12" by mysterious producer Blawan, an anonymous DJ. There seem to be more and more of those these days - Burial attempted to stay anonymous for awhile, Zomby's a prominent producer that's currently behind a mask - and there's something to be said about how it's a reaction to the "celebrification" of dance music and DJ culture that even fans of awful, awful trance music dislike. There's probably a blog post to be written about that. I'm pretty sure there have been several. I think I may have read about it in some prominent net rag, so I'm not going to go into it.

But it serves a practical purpose, this anonymity, does it not? A prominent DJ can release new songs and not have them be tested against his other material. When we get something like Fram / Iddy, we can only really engage the music on its own terms (you might be able to compare it to other Hessle Audio releases, but I'm not prepared to do that).

So yes, this is "post-garage", or "future garage", or whatever you want to call it. "Fram" leads off the single with understated bass (at least, compared to most dubstep these days) and queasy, gloomy techno synths lurching and slithering around its propulsive garage rhythm, a barely audible whisper sample looping throughout. Halfway into the song the synth moves a bit farther to the front of the mix and gets a little more elastic, pulsing and inflating and deflating. It's dark and weird, and you can dance to it. Naturally, I love it.

"Iddy", the b-side, starts off with barebones percussion clicking away while a gloomy organ sound creeps up, but it's a fake-out - the rhythm kicks in, and can I just say how much I love the sound of the kits on this track? It's the best, most dynamic and funky use of minimal drum sounds I've heard in some months, a standard to which so many so-called Garage acts seem to be incapable of meeting. I was sold on the song before Blawan's techno/jungle synths made their appearance, rising and falling like the call of some strange bird and forming a simple chord melody towards the end of the song.

Aren't the greatest entertainments the surprises? Hessle Audio is an imprint I have a lot of respect for even if their releases aren't the ones I immediately gravitate towards when I'm sitting down next to my turntable. A few more releases like this and I might have to rethink the distance to which I hold them. Sublime stuff." - description found on the pop stalinist.

#: RSLTD1001

320kbps

A. Detroit Falls
B. Orpheus

about producer: 'Pariah is a 21 year old music producer called Arthur Cayzer originally from Scotland and now living in London. We don’t know much about him, but we do know his tunes are amazing!'

note: "The two tracks on this debut single were the his first ever finished productions and snapped up by R&S under the noses of a whole bunch of interested high profile labels. They continue the R&S tradition of releasing forward thinking electronic music, and follow the lineage of Aphex Twin, Model 500, Patrick Pulsinger and Derrick May.
The two tracks on this single wear the influences on their sleeve, referencing the hip hop beat collages of Dilla and the moody atmospheric 2 step rhythms of Burial, but still contain the rich Pariah DNA which will be even more apparent on his future R&S singles. The stuff we have heard so far has blown our socks off taking influences from sources as diverse as Levon Vincent, Fennesz and classic Detroit techno as well as the likes of MJ Cole and Steve Gurley.
Already a name on the lips of the hip blog crowd (featured on Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, No Pain In Pop and Rcrd Lbl) and in demand on the European underground DJ circuit this debut 10” is likely to become a collectors item and catapult him onto much bigger things." - label.

may 2010
lbl: Idle Hands
#: IDLE003
electronic
house, uk garage
320kbps

A.  Basic Music Knowledge
B.  Hunger

note: "For some time now, Bristol has been a torchbearer for the deeper, more cultured side of UK bass music, with a gaggle of top-notch labels—Tectonic, Punch Drunk, Apple Pips and Immerse, primarily—spewing out quality releases with alarming regularity. Idle Hands, which runs out of the town's much-loved Rooted Records, looks to be no exception, having already graced us with two excellent 12-inches, and now this: young Joe Cowton's second release under his Kowton moniker, and most likely the darkest slab of slow house-meets-UKG you'll hear all year.

A-side "Basic Music Knowledge" sounds like something the Pink Panther would come up with after a heavy night out with the Workshop crew, its plodding bass and slinky hats establishing a suavely sinister groove. Chugging away at a sleazy 115 BPM, a muffled 4/4 kick—submerged deep in the mix—keeps it all locked together, while a chirpy, chipmunky female vocal evokes garage's champagne-swilling glory days (albeit minus the champagne, or the glory). B-side "Hunger" plunges fathoms deeper, losing a couple of BPM and ramping up the bass, which, aside from clickety hats and sparse, menacing FX, is all the track really consists of. It's amazing what 2-step sounds like at this tempo—tense, sweaty, claustrophobic—and that it works so well is just reward for Kowton's dark, daring approach." - Max Bacharach, RA.

A. If You Want Me
_
total time: 5:26

note: "After announcing that their Wireblock, Dress2Sweat and Stuffrecords imprints were to merge late last year, Glasgow's Numbers collective are now ready to set sail with their inaugural release. Can you blame them for bursting out of the blocks with what has been one of the most hyped tracks that has graced the dance floors of dubstep and funky nights over the past year? Martyn, Kode9, Ben UFO, Ikonika and Modeselektor (who used "If U Want Me" as the opening cut on their RA podcast) are just a handful of the DJs who've made sure that it's already ingrained into my conscience, and not without good reason. Whether it's the slinky 2-step bass, the looped female vocal or the whiney, pitch-bent synth that gets transformed throughout, London's Deadboy has made sure to include plenty of hooks, and while they may be fairly simple, it's the way that he makes them work together that really makes the track special.

While this may be a house track, it's unlikely to cross over into the boxes of more conventional house and techno jocks due to its percussive groundings in UK garage and funky. Saying that, if you like your swung beats and are looking for an anthem that is almost guaranteed to get the female contingent of the crowd going, "If U Want Me" might just be right for you. Whether Sasha will do a "Hyph Mngo" and play it at his next mega-rave remains to be seen, but Numbers' one-sided vinyl release should make sure that the track gets plenty more play outside of the inner circle of DJs that helped to popularise it. With future releases from Lazer Sword, Kavsrave and Redinho already lined-up, it looks like we'll have plenty more to look forward to from Numbers during the remaining months of 2010." - Richard Carnes, RA. take a look on review.

If you've been paying attention to the sets of Scratcha, Butterz or Kode 9 in the last few months you've no doubt clocked the searing heat of 'Acid'. It's got to be one Danjah's hardest cuts to date, giving a firm nod to '92 'ardkore with Belgian mentasms and stupendous stop/start rhythmic force that makes a clear case for the 'nuum genetics of Steve Gurley and co being carried through to Grime's lurching rhythmic swagger." - boomkat.
