Cobblestone Jazz - Chance EP [2010, vinyl, wagon repair]

2010
lbl: Wagon Repair
#: Wag060
electronic
minimal techno, downtempo
320kbps
silicon [7.0]

A.  Chance Dub
B.  Chance

Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate, Tyger Dhula, Colin de la Plante
note: This new E.P., ahead of a forthcoming new album, instead pursues a more introspective line. ‘A’ side “Chance Dub” definitely preponderates upon the latter, built as it is around a looping plucked riff, throbbing kick and phasing static ala any number of dub techno records, before overlaying a typically acoustic-sounding drum beat, bumping sub bass and gently lilting pads. Things progress in a rather uncharacteristically linear and repetitive fashion, leaving us with something that, whilst not unsatisfying, lacks the track development or the hook needed for our extended emotional investment.
‘B’ side “Chance” is better, spawning a locomotive relationship between the layered percussion and rolling bassline, a sparingly-deployed harmonized vocal hook and some full-blooded Rhodes piano virtuosity swimming in well-judged hall reverb. Where previous Cobblestone releases playfully alluded to or simply made emblematic the “jazz” component of their moniker, this is an out-and-out freeform, improvisational trip, while retaining a genuinely propulsive 4/4 force.
While these tracks undoubtedly continue to shine Wagon Repair's beacon for experimental-yet-functional dance music, they will still be judged against the abovementioned high points; and on that score, fail to deliver the floor-slaying, epic grandeur of “Dump Truck” or the unhinged, febrile, tech-edged darkness characterising much of “23 Seconds”. Having said that, there can surely be nothing more dispiriting as an artist to be continually judged against an older creative iteration, so perhaps that last comparison should be struck out, and this latest offering enjoyed for what it is: high quality organic dance music." - Inverted Audio, read full review.

beryl [7.8]

A. Vampire
B. Vampire Dub

producer: Scott Monteith

note: "Heavily insistent dub techno from Deadbeat on the latest Echocord catalogue number. 'vampire' comes in two versions, with the relentless throb of the original offset by spacious dub rhythms and surging bass for the skankers, while the Dub leans on a wicked halfstepped dub vibe reminding strongly of '2' era Pole."

Tom Trago - Voyage Direct Remixes [2009, vinyl, rush hour recordings]

2009
lbl: Rush Hour Recordings
#: RH 025-R1
electronic
deep house
320kbps
carborundum [9.3]

A. Passion (Motor City Drum Ensemble Remix)
B1. Brothers Of String (Yuro Trago Remix)
B2. Lost In The Streets Of NYC (Actress Remix)

note: "In a recent interview with Bodytonic, Tom Trago told the site about his disco and Detroit influences for his recent album: Voyage Direct. In this remix pack, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Yuro and Actress take those influences even further.

"Passion" gets smothered by Motor City Drum Ensemble. 909 hats and claps litter the highs, while a steady 119bpm kick roots this track firmly in the deep category. Strings and classic disco vocals bring it all together, making this one a sure-fire hit for the deep house crowd.

On the flip side, "Brothers of String" gets a reworking from Yuro and Trago himself, a tandem that has often worked together in the past. The duo slow the pace of the original and add melodies, transforming it into a slow burning house workout. While good, it's the weakest of the three here because Actress delivers techno in a Millsian style. Fast, gritty drums pound along while synth lines are looped into oblivion. Lighter elements such as piano riffs are introduced sparingly; a stark contrast to the harsh soundscape. If Trago's Detroit namedrops are anything to go by, he must've loved to hear what Actress had done for "Lost in the Streets of NYC." - Ross Jackson.

1. Kosmos [1402]
2. Plesetsk Cosmodrome
3. Skynet 2B

producer: Alex "Omar" Smith

note: "A mechanical, lo-fi funk manifests itself into his productions, with crunching hi-hats and chugging, rumbling kicks making for some pretty alien yet strangely warming sounds. "Kosmos 1402" has a sound bed of 303's and droning synth sounds. A rattling, relentless hi-hat hook repeats over and over while waves of electronic goodness cascade over your ears, sounding a bit like a war-march for invading aliens. "Plesetsk" harks back to Smith's dark, brooding minimal sound. A straight-up 4/4 kick / hi-hat pattern underpins some enveloping synth squelches and eerie, metallic sound-scapes to create an atmospheric track which conjures up images of space stations and super novas. "Skynet 2 B" finishes off the twelve and is a short, soulful, piano-led house number with emotive chords, dreamy textures and it's Larry Heard influence worn firmly on it's sleeve."

A. Put It Back
B. Put It Back (Ramadanman Refix)

note: "The original cut starts with a dry, pared-down 4/4 kick, weaving vocal snippets and found sounds into the sonic field before downpitched 808 bass and lovingly-processed stabs take turns to push things along. Across seven minutes, the track gracefully unfurls heady rolling beats and lush sweeping strings for an hypnotic interpretation of deep Detroit-esque house placed in a contemporary bass-emphatic setting. Ramadanman brings sexy back with this ace minimalist refix increases the tempo and filters James' synth work over a rattling and spluttering 2-step beat, ramping up and reeling in the tension before an extended drop fades out the beats to provoke a startling shift in mood!"

note: "[...] Entre Guillaume et Risquée to seal the year—well, financial year I suppose, given that it’s June—with the Gremlin-y They Only Come Out at Night EP (don’t feed ‘em after midnight). Guillaume’s side is strongly reminiscent of early Luciano, replete with the Latin melody and its slight melancholia – indeed, this record would find a welcome home on Cadenza. Ironically (given the title) this track is perfectly pitched for early, early mornings – it’s a sunrise track that’s ‘just Ibiza enough’ if you dig, and there’s also this really cool tension between the melody (that wants to swoon) and the drums (which really, really want to stand up and dance). note: "Durée, their last studio work since 2007’s collaboration with Tape, and their follow-up to Shining on 12k (12k1031, now out of print), takes influence from the French philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson’s concept of “pure durée,” an idea that one’s consciousness is a constant flow and not something that can be divided, reversed, or measured. Minamo used these ideas in creating their music, despite the contradiction of the time-stamped CD format, to try to subvert the ideas of compartmentalized “time” and “space.” With a strong sense of non-linearity and flow taken from Bergson’s ideas, Minamo have created a colorful, skittering wash of music, noise, and texture that embraces a sense of out-there-ness." - distributor.

note: "Mild Pitch return with their first release in the new decade and serve you Manuel Tur’s solo debut on the young Essen-based label. Opening the EP with the sizzling beatless prelude that is “The Priceless Message”, the title track “Agrafena” carries on with heavy rough drums and countless layers of shifting vibes and strings that grow to a swirl of epic dimension. The dramatic build-up and fuzzy textures create that trademark dense atmosphere Manuel’s work is best known for. The flip side offers a more experimental take, fusing the stomping and jazzy drums of “Agrafena” with the deconstructed sound fragments of the prelude, that make “Dream & Delirium” a truly phantasmagoric yet mysteriously dark but hot-blooded affair."

I1. The "Y" Theme

II1. Shadow City (Dharavi Mix)

II2. Mumbai Dweller

note: "The Yore Captain returns to his own Yore Imprint on the Labels 21st Release. “Shadow City” presents different visions of funky house grooves. The A side’s “The “Y” Theme” gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices, a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. After the voices appear, the groove’s intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. In its opening moments, “Shadow City” opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but that’s traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. The B side’s B2 track, “Mumbai Dweller” keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove that’s dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding Dark Chords to it, giving this EP a Darker Feeling towards the end." - distributor.
